The Appeal of Humanistic Psychology –
But A Road to No Where

Like many university students, I wanted to know "what makes me tick" or more accurately "what makes me a person." So, I studied psychology (my academic major) and eventually learned about Humanistic Psychology's focus on well-functioning human beings, and liked this better than Freudian studies of neurotics and Behaviorism's studies of animals. When my Dad (my hero and mentor) rejected my longer hair and me in 1968 during the "hippie" era, I wanted to know why because I was deeply hurt by this. I realized his Over 30 Generation had dedicated their entire lives to Behaving (achieving, earning a living, getting promoted at work, making new products, getting married, raising children, fighting wars for their country, etc.), whereas the Under 30 Generation rejected all of this to focus on Being (getting in touch with one's feelings, creating a positive self-image, holding Be-ins, etc.).
While writing two graduate papers on this, I developed my very Self-centered Being, Behaving, Becoming Model in an attempt to align Being and Behaving qualities and characteristics so that I could Become Self-actualizing. I was like some 83% of Americans in the late 1960s to 1970s: I was a seeker of Self-fulfillment, like those reported by Daniel Yankelovich in New Rules: Searching for Self-fulfillment in a World Turned Upside Down (1981).
My Spiritual Memoir describes my futile and vain journey that never produced fulfilled promises – plus the hard Lessons Learned and Spiritual Insights gained from God. You can read an Excerpt from Chapter 12.
